The president of the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers (Promango), Angel Gamarra Condori, stated at the International Mango Congress that the Kent mango variety, which has a production area of more than 18 thousand hectares in the region of Piura, is the most demanded variety in the United States and European markets.
Peru has a total of 22 thousand hectares devoted to the cultivation of this variety, and producers expect this campaign will be similar to the 2016/2017 campaign, in which the country exported 157 thousand tons.
At present, the biggest challenge is controlling the fruit fly (Anastrepha) because the phytosanitary requirements demanded by the European Union have become stronger; something Senasa is already working on.
Gamara Condori said that exports to Europe would not necessarily be affected, as it all depends on how the standard is implemented after the warning given by Europe.
Shipping losses
According to projections for this year, Peruvian mango exports to the European Union (EU) would amount to 148 million dollars, reaching 244 million dollars. However, these shipments are at risk due to the new phytosanitary restrictions imposed by the block, which will come into effect in September, said Carlos Posada, the executive director of the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (Idexcam-CCL).
