The drought in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has affected the production of bananas, decreasing their quality to the point that they are not suitable for export to the United States.
According to the Treasurer of the State Council of Banana Producers, Humberto Perez Alonso, the drought has affected the majority of the thousand hectares dedicated to this crop.
Despite the high demand for this fruit from North America, shipments have ceased. According to Humberto Perez, the plantations must have irrigation to be able to comply with the quality requested by the markets and, even though they were exporting a 20-ton trailer a week to the United States, they only managed to export it in one month because of the fall in quality due to the drought.
The lack of water also affected other crops, such as lemon, and now producers expect the rainy season will help improve the crops.
