Canova director Ernesto Fornari explains that the organic sector is expanding to include an increasing number of products, some of which are suitable to being exported.
Packaging of organic strawberries under the Almaverde brand
"We currently export around 30% of our volumes and the objective is to reach 50% over the next few years. Brexit has not had an effect on the British market so far, so we are planning on strengthening our presence with table grapes and seedless varieties in particular."
Quantities available are increasing - organic apples will pass from the 3500 tons of 2018 to 16 thousand in 2020. The volumes of table grapes will triple reaching 5000 tons. The same goes for strawberries, as the Melissa variety is now being grown on 30 additional hectares. Canova is also focusing on melons, mini-watermelons and cherries.
"We need to promote organic products without making them banal and stressing the importance of producer profitability. Prices must be accessible to consumers, increasing competitiveness and efficiency in the fields. Retailers must understand this step as well."
When it comes to packaging, Canova is focusing on biodegradable options more and more so that the entire chain can be sustainable. "It will be possible to find more organic products in supermarkets as consumers are requiring them. We need to be able to stagger supplies and find the right balance with varieties that are nice to eat, with good yields and suitable to be cultivated without chemicals."
