Chile: XIV International Blueberry Seminar 2019

The Seminar, which will be held on April 11 from 7.30 am in the Hotel Monticello Conference Center, Km. 57, Ruta 5 Sur, San Francisco de Mostazal, will focus on analyzing the current situation of the industry, international markets, new technologies and technical and commercial challenges in the development of blueberry in Chile.

The event is being organized by the Blueberries Consultant and it's being sponsored by the Institute of Agricultural Research, INIA
This seminar is aimed at producers, exporters, professionals, advisors, researchers and authorities of public and private entities related to the blueberry export industry. In it, they will discuss relevant aspects related to the quality and condition of fruit, efficiency and productivity, sharing knowledge and updated information regarding the cultivation of blueberry and its agronomic management, prioritizing quality and not just productivity.

Chile's XIV International Blueberries Seminar 2019 will have three international exhibitors and 8 national exhibitors (including 3 specialists from INIA), more than 23 international and national sponsor companies, and an attendance of more than 350 people.

The blueberry sector is one of the most important sectors to strengthen national fruit growing in international markets. Chile has more than 16 thousand hectares planted with blueberries, concentrating the largest area in the Region of Maule and Biobio.
The management aspects, which are key to the sustainability of the industry, that will be addressed in this version of the seminar are: blueberry production under plastic cover, an evaluation of the blueberry's water condition via thermographic images captured with drones, wood diseases in blueberries, pre-harvest and harvest factors that affect post-harvest, foliar fertilization, environmental and physiological factors, estimation of water requirements, use of vegetable bio-stimulants, nutritional tools to obtain quality blueberries, innovation, and digital transformation.

It will be an opportunity to know the local experience and to share experiences and initiatives developed in other countries, for example, David Bryla of the Research Horticulturist of the US Department of Agriculture, will be making a presentation about irrigation planning, estimation of water requirements and their relationship with the growth and yield potential of blueberry plants.

Patrick Du Jardin, an agricultural engineer and Ph.D. of the Plant Biology Unit Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech University of Liège, France, will discuss their experience regarding plant bio-stimulants, and innovation for the sustainable production of crops. Meanwhile, Heiner Goldbach, Ph.D. (Dr. rer. Agr.), Professor of Plant Nutrition of INRES, University of Bonn, Germany, will address the topic of foliar fertilization, as well as environmental, physiological and management factors that affect the permanence, penetration and translocation of nutrients.

Grecia Navas, the Blueberry Project Manager for Mexico and South America, said that "this seminar is an excellent instance to support the blueberry industry as it is a sector that has generated a strong demand in knowledge and validation of technologies that are key to compete today in the world's demanding markets." "We believe that knowledge and adoption of new technologies plays a fundamental role to maintain the international positioning that Chile's blueberries have achieved in recent years," she added.

When we designed the program, Navas said, "we sought to focus on in-depth content that is relevant to the industry and to the producers, exporters, receivers, advisers and agricultural entrepreneurs' concerns, in order to share knowledge and updated information regarding the cultivation of blueberry with outstanding international exhibitors and important companies in the industry."
