Honduras: Avocado imports down by 2 million dollars

Avocado imports decreased by two million dollars, as they went from 11 million to nine million, stated yesterday the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Mauricio Guevara.

Two years ago Honduras imported about 11 million dollars of avocado from Guatemala and Mexico, but imports have decreased with national production and the impulse of the National Avocado Plan, which aims at cultivating 4 thousand hectares of avocado crops in four years. So far, 697 hectares have been planted.

The project reactivates production through various initiatives and at the same time strengthens the Field to Table's Task Force.

The program has different stages. In its first stage, the priority is to cover the national demand and then supply the international market.

The avocado is grown in the regions of Comayagua, Siguatepeque, Santa Barbara, Intibuca, San Marcos de Colon, Choluteca, and Olancho. Currently the planting area amounts to 557 hectares, the areas with the highest production are Ocotepeque, Santa Barbara, Intibuca, Yoro, El Paraiso, and Comayagua.
