Supply of cauliflower and broccoli scarce

The supply of both broccoli and cauliflower is scarce at the moment, according to one trader. The market has a lot of demand, so prices are high. Scandinavia, Germany and France are on the market for broccoli, and sales of broccoli are also going well in the Netherlands. “When the weather is rainy, more boiling vegetables are eaten, and that can now be noticed,” the trader says. Broccoli prices increased considerably because of this, and are now between 1.40 and 1.50 euro for good quality.

The lack of supply is due to the heat stress of some weeks ago, resulting in a scattered harvest. Normally, the growers go into the fields to harvest twice. However, in the past few months, the broccoli plants were unable to develop evenly. Some plants have buds of two centimetres, and some have buds of 15 centimetres, which is why the growers now have to go into the fields to harvest five times. The same is true for cauliflower.

For the more robust outdoor crops such as red and white cabbage, moods can be called good as well, according to that same trader. “Good prices are made, and because there were some accidents here and there, a good export was started. The old cabbage is completely gone, the first setting of the new cabbage was of slightly poorer quality, but it seems the cabbage developed better, despite the heat.”
