Large calibres harvested within a 75 day cycle

Spain: Launch of new Whiton cauliflower

Last week, Sakata Seed Ibérica held a Field Day in Ventas de Zafaraya, in which it presented a new cauliflower variety called Whiton. Around 80 attendees had the chance to learn about it first-hand, as well as to taste it and take part in a raffle in which three people won 10,000 Whiton seeds.

After the new variety's presentation, the growers, distributors and seed companies present at the event enjoyed an aperitif during which they had the opportunity to share their impressions.

The first comments were very positive. The Whiton's great foliar coverage was deemed one of the most outstanding aspects, since it saves money, as it makes it unnecessary for the florets to be manually covered. Also, they pointed out that the Whiton is a great alternative for the cultivation of cauliflower from the beginning of summer in interior areas until mid-autumn in areas with a more temperate climate. Another feature that caught the attendees' attention was the intense white colour of the head, which makes it very attractive, visually speaking.

For his part, Antonio Ibarra, Brassica Product Promoter at Sakata Ibérica, said that the "Whiton is a semitropical variety which will reach large calibres within a 75 day cycle."
