Turkey: Training project to bring more women into agriculture

A training program undertaken by a Social Support Program of the government was completed during July in Igdir, a rural city located in northeastern Turkey. The training had started in November and was aimed at providing information and knowledge to women about agricultural production.

This 8-month training program was given by a female agricultural engineer to 50 participants and the participants received detailed information about organic agriculture, agricultural production methods, greenhouse production, seedling and vegetable growing. Half of the participants were also taken to Antalya, the main fruit and vegetable production region in Turkey for a 5 day trip to visit greenhouses and production fields.

A 5,000 square foot facility was built as a part of the project to offer training with practical applications. Training program specifically focused on tomato and cucumber production and participants were given a certification after the completion of the program. The hope is to bring more women into the agricultural program especially in rural parts of the country and this sort of programme is considered to be an important step in achieving this goal.
