Spain: Organic farming in Valencia yields spectacular data

A report published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the ecological production data in Spain for the year 2017, confirms the trend of sustained growth and the consolidation of organic production in Spain. In the European Union, Spain has the biggest area dedicated to this farming system, with 2,082,173 hectares. Spain is also one of the five most important organic producers in the world.

The evolution of organic farming in the Valencian Community continues yielding spectacular data. In the last year, the number of operators that have decided to bet on this production method increased by 14%, while the area dedicated to it has grown by 19%. As such, the Valencian Community had the biggest growth in operators and area devoted to ​​organic farming in 2017.

According to the president of the Committee of Organic Agriculture of the Valencian Community (CAECV), Jose Antonio Rico, "these data confirm that organic farming isn't a fad, but a trend; it has become a strategic and alternative category for conventional operators that take positions in the ecological sector, which has seen the number of operators in our community increase by 60% since 2010."

By province, Valencia accounts for 60% of the total organic producers (1,785); Alicante, 32% (977); and Castellon, 8% (251). According to data, the greatest evolution in the number of operators has occurred in Valencia, which had a 21% increase.

This data confirms the trend of sustained growth and the consolidation of organic production in Spain. In the European Union, Spain has the biggest area dedicated to this farming system. Spain is also one of the five most important organic producers in the world. Thus, the surface dedicated to this type of production has increased by 3.1% compared to 2016, exceeding 2,082,000 hectares. Half goes to permanent pastures, a quarter to arable land crops, and the other quarter to permanent crops.
