Avocados still have to wait

Ecuador: Tomatoes ready for export to US

On Wednesday, July 4, 2018, the US opened its borders to receive tree tomatoes, as fresh fruit, from Ecuador. This generated high expectations with the producers of Tungurahua, the province with the largest amount of this crop.

“If exporting means having better prices in the sale, combating pests and technifying the crop, we are ready,” says farmer Piedad Ganag. She also said that her 7,500 m² of plantations are monitored by Agrocalidad technicians, Ecuador’s own version of Aphis.

The crops are inspected by Aphis and Agrocalidad. “It is one of the requirements of the Aphis technicians who have already visited these areas. The producers must meet other phytosanitary requirements so that our product can be admitted into the United States,“ says Javier Rodríguez, district director of Agrocalidad.

According to ecuadortimes.net, exporting the tomatoes would certainly help the sector, that is currently getting low prices. Esteban Espinosa, Aphis technician, says that Ecuador has a lot of potential to export, due to the presence of a strong Ecuadorian and Latin population in the US.

The avocado is also on the Aphis list, and it began the process to allow the entry of the Hass avocado into the US market. At this time, comments of producers and exporters on the phytosanitary requirements and other parameters are still coming in. Suggestions will be received until August 14. Then will come the analysis stage. There is no definite deadline as to when avocados can finally be exported.
