High-quality leek cultures grown in Lower Austria

Growers along the Danube plant their seasonal open-air leeks

Growers along the Danube are currently starting the planting of their open-air leeks. After extensive soil preparation, the plants are planted, after which they will grow until late August/early September. Then they will be harvested as autumn leeks, and offered as such on the market. Fruchthof Detter in Lower Austria -on the banks of the Danube- offers customers an insight into the planting phase.

Three lanes of pencil-thick leek plantlets can be planted at the same time with the planting machine, with a distance of about 15 to 20 cm between plants and a distance of 40 to 60 cm between lanes.

Specialized grower
In Tullnerfeld, north of the Danube, the particularly tasty vegetables of the Detter family have been grown for generations. The light soils in the Wagram region offer excellent conditions for the cultivation of high-quality outdoor crops such as celeriac, carrots and cabbage sprouts. In addition, in the Absdorf area, on some 8 hectares the family grows Dutch asparagus varieties such as the Backlim and Grolim, which are sorted by size and color and marketed within the region. Leaf parsley belongs to their specialized product range as well.
