“Our box actually draws consumers to supermarkets”

“The Euro Gijbels fruit and vegetable boxes have been on the market for some months now, and they’re incredibly popular,” says John Gijbels, the fifth generation in family company Euro Gijbels. “Demand for our boxes and pickup points is now coming from consumers. Responses on social media are very positive, and many people are asking when a pickup point near them will be established. Right now, the pick-up points are spread across Belgium, but we’re trying to add as many points as possible.”

“Euro Gijbels is a wholesaler’s, which is why the products in the box are very fresh. We don’t have to work with other wholesalers, and we have a large assortment. We have thousands of products to choose from, so we can make new variations every week,” John says. Euro Gijbels isn’t in the way of their customers with the box either. “The box actually draws consumers to our customers. Many supermarkets have become pickup points, but they’re also customers of the wholesaler’s. Logistically, this is an advantage as well, because the logistical supply chain between these points already exists.”

Different boxes can be ordered from Euro Gijbels. There are three Euro Gijbels boxes, one with fruit, one with vegetables and one combination box. Besides the Euro Gijbels box, there’s an organic one, Biobox, as well, available with fruit, vegetables or a combination thereof. “The boxes hold about five to six kilos of product, and prices are around six to seven euro. We think it’s important to offer consumers a basic assortment, and no products they won’t know what to do with. We want to offer people convenience, and that’s not possible with unfamiliar products,” John says.

“I think the boxes are popular because customers aren’t stuck with a subscription, and there are no hidden costs. We’re now looking into maybe doing something with recipes in future, but the products are common enough for many people to know what to do with them. Each week we e-mail our customers to inform them about one of the products in the box. The goal is to teach customers more about fruit and vegetables,” John concludes.
