In the search for better economic alternatives, the producers of Valle del Carrizo will start planting asparagus this year.
The ambitious project is to incorporate more than 2 thousand hectares in Sinaloa.
Pedro Esparza Lopez, the president of the 17th Peasant Municipal Committee, said this crop was definitely a good alternative for productive reconversion because it would represent a solution to the recurrent low temperatures issues in the valley, as this crop can withstand being 14 degrees below zero. In addition, it is a good economic option for producers, as they would be growing it under contract and, therefore, will have its marketing assured.
He also said that the asparagus was a perennial crop that lasted 10 years, which would ensure producers obtain a secure income for a decade.
So far, producers already contracts have contracts for the initial establishment of 370 hectares of this crop, an area that will continue to increase.
He also stated that they were selecting good quality land to guarantee the best possible results in the establishment of this crop, which may extend in the coming years to the rest of the state's cold belt, as it has been proven that this crop adapts to the state's climate conditions and soils.
