Almost 26 hectares of aubergines in Swiss greenhouses

Last year, 9,597 tons of aubergines were consumed in Switzerland. That's 1.14 kilos per capita, per year. Some 3,532 tons of aubergines came from Switzerland, the rest was imported.

Aubergines are cultivated in Switzerland almost exclusively in greenhouses. In 2017, they were grown on 25.94 hectares, while on open fields it was a mere 1.28 hectares. The organically grown aubergine acreage was 4.39 hectares. They are grown mainly in warmer areas, such as the Ticino or the Lake Geneva region.

Originally from India, the aubergine or eggplant was brought to Europe in the 13th century by the Arabs. The first varieties were white and were called ‘eggplants’ because of their egg-shaped appearance.
