Greenhouse cultivation is revitalizing in Ukraine's liberated territories

Following the liberation of the right-bank area of the Kherson region of Ukraine, a resurgence in agricultural activity is underway. Among those leading this revitalization is Alexei Bilyi, whose farm in the Kherson district specializes in vegetable cultivation.

Transitioning from grains and technical crops, Bilyi has significantly expanded his vegetable cultivation this year, with thousands of tomato, cucumber, and zucchini plants. However, challenges abound. During the occupation, Bilyi's farm lay dormant as Russian military forces devastated infrastructure, destroying greenhouses and looting equipment.

Despite the setback, the gradual revival of Bilyi's enterprise has seen the return of former employees, aiding in both greenhouse and field operations. Irrigation poses no issue, thanks to a well on the property acquired five years ago.

Diversifying his crops, Bilyi has incorporated a special breed of bumblebees for pollination, ensuring robust yields. While the primary market for his produce remains Kherson, low local purchasing power necessitates exports to markets in neighbouring regions like Mykolaiv and Odesa.

However, challenges persist. The constant threat of shelling and landmines, coupled with a lack of financial resources, hinders efforts to expand production capacity.
