80% of Turkey's cucumber and gherkin exports come from the Aegean region

The cucumber and gherkin of exports of Turkey reached 77 million USD at the end of 2017. The Aegean region exporters are responsible for 62 million of these exports which is 80 % of the total exports.

Turkish growers produce annually 100,000 tons of cucumbers and 75,000 tons of gherkin, a majority of which are exported to European Union countries.

Aegean Region Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association Vice President Murat Odul: “It is very important for us that our growers follow recent developments and trends in the industry and are aware of the legal regulations to benefit from them in the best way possible. This way they will be able to grow the best quality products in the most efficient conditions and compete in global markets.

83% of the cucumber and gherkins exported were sold to European Union countries. We organize information sessions to update our growers about the changes in European Union regulations. The acceptable maximum limit for metalaxyl active material was lowered from 0.5 % to 0.1 % and our growers should pay close attention to this otherwise they will lose significant amounts of money.

Turkey’s exports in 2017 represent a 7 % increase from the previous year and the number of export destinations was 88 countries in total for these products.

For cucumber and gherkin, the Netherlands was the top export destination with 24.3 million USD; followed by Germany with 17.6 million USD and UK with 6.5 million USD. These countries are followed by Switzerland with 5.5 million USD and Italy with 2.7 million USD. “
