Washington's rhubarb season off to perfect start

In Washington, the domestic rhubarb season has kicked off in ideal conditions. Perfect temperatures, overcast skies and a smattering of rain have helped growers produce a nice crop. The season began last month and is expected to continue well into fall.

"We started our field rhubarb season on April 9 and conditions have been excellent," said Roger Knutson of Puyallup Valley Rhubarb. "In fact, it's one of the best crops we've had in years. We have enjoyed ideal weather conditions, with it being not too hot and generally overcast, condition in which rhubarb thrives. There has been just enough rain for us to largely avoid irrigating for the most part, although we have started to irrigate in recent weeks."

The domestic season runs for about six months, before switching back to imports from Europe during the winter months. "Due to the great conditions, supplies are very good right now," Knutson continued. "Our rhubarb season generally goes to about the middle of October. We tend to run later than other growers, mainly because they switch their focus to other crops in the fall."

Demand down slightly in recent weeks
The demand for rhubarb has fallen during the past few weeks, as consumers hold off until summer arrives. The vegetable has a strong following in the summer months, as Washington produce is available and in better demand.

"Demand has been down a little in the past two to three weeks," Knutson said. "We are hoping this will improve soon because June is typically a very good month for rhubarb. Puyallup Valley Rhubarb pack them in 20lb waxed boxes as there is not currently a great demand for value-added packaging. The market is currently steady, but it is about a dollar less when compared with previous years."
