Macri says Argentina is far from repeating the 2001 crisis

The president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, stated that his country was far from suffering a crisis like the ones it had experienced in the past, but that he understood the citizens' concern after the sharp fall in the peso and the negotiations with the IMF.

"I know that people are concerned that our current situation can lead to a bigger crisis. I understand it, we understand it, but we are far from that: this situation isn't comparable to other crises," Macri stressed in a televised message.

This is the president's first public pronouncement after the government announced it was applying for a loan a week ago. However, the statements made by members of his Cabinet a few days ago pointed in the same direction.

Macri said that the executive and the population could overcome the current situation and that the world was supporting Argentina and would continue to do so.
