Argentina: Stability in the lettuce market

The entry of lettuce to the Central Market of Buenos Aires (MCBA) has been stable this year when compared to the volumes that entered the market in 2016. In 2017, the market received 21,475.8 tons of lettuce, practically the same amount as the 21,483.9 tons that entered the market in the previous year.

Since 2001, the volume of lettuce that entered the MCBA had declined by 35.5%, so the stabilization in the last two seasons is good news for the sector, which could recover in the coming years.

The Creole and Gallega lettuces varieties accounted for 33.3% of the total income, followed by the Mantecosa variety with 30.8%. The commercial Capuchina variety accounted for 22.6% of the volume, while the French variety stood at 8.7% and the Purple variety accounted for 4.7%. According to the publication of the bulletin of the MCBA, the offer of Capuchina lettuces increased by 4.9% and the French lettuces by 11.7%.

The highest volumes (of the Mantecosa and Creole varieties) into the province of Buenos Aires originated from the towns of La Plata and the Green Belt (Florencio Varela, González Catán, Luján, etc.). The offer of General Pueyrredon was mainly composed of the Capuchina commercial type. These three areas account for 88.7% of the total lettuce sold in the Central Market of Buenos Aires.
