Giel Hermans, Hermans Suikermais:

"In two weeks we will swap from Senegalese to Moroccan sweet corn"

The last containers of Senegalese sweetcorn have been harvested and are on their way to Europe. "The season will then smoothly transition to the Moroccan product", says Giel Hermans of Hermans Suikermais, a Dutch sweetcorn trading company.

"In Morocco, harvesting has tentatively begun. The first trucks are underway. It has been a tad difficult to find trucks. This is due to the abundant melon harvest. The problem has, however, been solved", he says.

"Harvest estimates are 10% lower than previous years. This is due to a cold spell during the flowering period. This means markets such as the Danish one cannot yet be supplied."

"Temperatures in Morocco are also not extremely high. Gradual ripening is, therefore, possible. So, the market will not be oversupplied", expects Giel.
