Rijk Zwaan develops round-leaf arugula

As a relatively new player on the arugula market, Rijk Zwaan developed a new range with two types: the wild arugula (with varieties Themisto RZ and Sinope RZ), and the Sparkle RZ, "a real innovation on the market."

"Beyond the essential agronomic characteristics required, namely yield, resistance and conservation, our range of arugula is distinguished by other characteristics such as taste, colour, or the shape of the leaves."

The arugula trio offered by Rijk Zwaan makes it possible to envisage new types of mixtures, in particular with seedlings, lamb's lettuce, or spinach.

"Sparkle RZ is a real innovation in our arugula range, not only because of its original shape, similar to that of spinach, but also due to its subtle taste, which brings diversity to salad mixes. Agronomically, Sparkle RZ is the perfect answer to producers, with excellent preservation possibilities thanks to its thick leaves, and very good vigor, even in cold conditions."

Rijk Zwaan is still working on the development of radish varieties, suitable for all seedling seasons; Although currently under experimentation, these new varieties will complete the range very soon. The company is also working on the appearance of its spinach (with the possibility of bringing colour into its range, as well as varying the shapes of the leaves), and wants to introduce a new variety of Swiss chard: Charbell RZ.

"Charbell RZ, currently being tested, will complete our range of Swiss chard. The intense red of its petiole catches the eye, and brings a clear visual improvement to bags and trays. Charbell RZ has proven its good performance in the field, against mildew and cercospora."
