This month the French wholesaler Desmettre & Fils launched its organic range. The products are sold under the brand Desmettre Bio. Jérôme Desmettre: “I recognise that there is a huge demand for organic products. Both clients and suppliers kept asking for it. Since it is our goal to offer a complete range of fruits and vegetables, we decided to meet expectations by entering the organic market.”

The organic products offered by Desmettre & Fils are mostly traditional products such as apples, pears, oranges, bananas, salads, potatoes and onions. “We also offer organic avocados and seasonal products such as asparagus and strawberries. Whenever possible, we try to purchase our products locally; 200 kilometres from France at the most. We enlarge this circle if needed. At the moment we import organic oranges and tangerines from Spain and Italy, exotics from all over the world and Pear Williams from Argentina, because there are only few French pears left. Our grapefruits are produced in Corsica.”

“There still is a lot of research to be done on organic production. Organic bananas for example are difficult to grow. They grow best in a wet and warm climate where bacteria are powerful enemies. It is much easier to grow organic crops in a cold and dry environment with less parasites.”
