Pesticides use have always been an important tool in the production of carrots and cabbage. They control various diseases, insects and weeds that affect crop and cause severe economic losses in modern intense growing operations.
Pesticides are utilized in seedling production, during planting, trough crop development and crop maturity to maximize yield, quality and respond to customers demands. However, the extensive use of chemical insecticides has resulted in many environmental problems, reduction of beneficial species and insect resistance.
To ensure safe food and to protect the environment, Arrigoni development center proposes alternatives to chemical control - The insect screen as a "GREEN" approach to insecticide pollution management.
Different studies on the dimensions of carrot and cabbage insect pests helped us to create BIOFIELD 80-insect screen with appropriate hole size to protect against most invasive species like:
In carrot production: Psilla Apicalis (known as Carrot Root Fly), Trioza Apicalis and Lygus Rugulipennis;
In cabbage production:
- Delia Radicum – cabbage root fly
- Plutella xylostella - diamondback moth
- Phyllotreta sp. – cabbage flea beetles
- Eurydema oleracea – cabbage bug
- Mamestra brassicae – cabbage moth
- Pieris rapae – small cabbage white butterfly
- Pieris brassicae – cabbage butterfly
BIOFIELD 80 is a woven, soft and light net for insect protection, in HDPE monofilament with great tenacity (hole dimensions mm 0.77 x 1.44). Due to these characteristics it is possible to cover directly carrot plants in open field and do other growing operations unhindered. Furthermore BIOFIELD 80 offer to producers more benefits like hail, bird and animal protection. In spring time it provides protection against cold winds and a better water regime during hot summer days.
