Germany: More carrots from local soil than ever before

Easter is coming! Of course, people are also anticipating their cherished rituals like the traditional egg hunt, hare jokes, family visits, spring-themed Easter decorations or culinary delights around the deliciously crunchy Easter classic "carrots".

At the root of its success
Whatever type of carrot you prefer, this bright orange vegetable has real star potential. In total, carrots were grown in 2017 on an area of 12,545 ha (2016: 11,209 ha - 2015: 9,649 ha). This is about 25% more acreage than the entire German island of Fehmarn and almost 10% of the total German outdoor vegetable area. Together with asparagus and onions, carrots form the trio of the most important vegetable crops and account for around 41% of the total outdoor area. While asparagus is the dominant vegetable variety in terms of acreage, carrots are measured in terms of quantities harvested. At 733,927 tons in 2017, they accounted for almost 20% of the total outdoor crop harvest. (2016: 642,000 t - 2015: 527,000 t). This is also reflected in consumption: every German consumed around 6 kg of root vegetables last year, and of these, some 4.3 kg were carrots.
