Spain: A year in prison for stealing three sacks of oranges

A man has been sentenced to one year in prison for stealing three sacks of oranges on a farm in the outskirts of Palma. The accused broke into a fruit tree plantation after opening a hole in a wire fence, for which he has now been convicted. He appealed the ruling of the criminal court before the Provincial Court, but they rejected his arguments and confirmed the ruling.

The events took place between seven and nine o'clock in the morning of 13 March 2014. The defendant cut the fence that surrounded the property and took numerous oranges from the trees, which he took away in three sacks. He was then surprised by an employee of the resident, who raised the alarm.

With the description of the intruder, the National Police managed to locate and arrest the man while he was still near the farm and in possession of the sacks. The agents also found the hole in the fence. According to those affected, the intruder broke into the field every week to pick oranges.

The defendant alleged that there was no evidence that the fruits were from the complainants' property, but they identified the sacks that he was carrying.

The Provincial Court has now ratified the sentence to one year in prison for a crime of robbery with force.
