Premium goods
While the other varieties that the wholesaling distributes were already gone in December, the Xenia pears will still be available for about 6 more weeks. The sales were very good due to the weather and the prices were satisfactory, said both marketer Helmut Willauer and CEO Christine Büchele. “We distribute Xenia pears exclusively for the Lake Constance fruit region. The Xenia is also a variety that you can market until April, as it stores very well and has a relatively good shelf life in the consumer’s kitchen.”
The fruit wholesale market on Lake Constance is currently not registering any great competition from foreign goods, although products from Italy, Chile and South Africa are already present in large quantities. Willauer says the regional element is a great advantage: he is convinced that the German consumer first accesses local commodities, and only then will buy fruit from other areas in Germany, Europe and overseas. It is also a high quality premium product with a sweet taste: '' The optimal diameter is 75 to 90, and the large-size fruits of over 90 millimeters are sold in the urban wholesale markets.”
Fruit wholesale market Eriskirch Josef Spanagel GmbH is a contract marketer of market community Bodenseeobst eG and specializes in the marketing of seasonal top, stone and berry fruit. Among other things, the company has an eight-lane sorting system for apples and pome fruit with water rides and a wide variety of packaging lines. Apart from the domestic clientele, the company also has customers on the other side of Lake Constance, in Switzerland and Austria. This year local producers harvested 'just’ 1,000 tonnes of Xenia pears due to weather conditions. In about 2-3 years, however, a total of 2,500 to 3,000 tons per season should be brought to the market.
