Kenya: Murang’a County government urged to build fruit processing plant

Last Monday, former Kiharu MP Muturi Mwangi said that too many farmers have to sell their fruit to brokers at throwaway prices for lack of a good market or good processing facilities. Muturi, himself a farmer, said a good plant would stop farmers from losing millions of Kenyan shillings.

He said farmers sell their mangoes at an average of Sh5 per fruit (4 eurocents) to brokers who then resell them for Sh20 (16 eurocents). The brokers take advantage of lack of proper marketing strategies to exploit farmers.

“We are unable to recover the production costs that we incurred in spraying and tending to mango trees,” Muturi said. Furthermore, a factory would provide jobs to hundreds of youths and help stabilise prices, according to an article by the-star.co.ke.
