Spain: Alicante closing season with 20% drop in bagged table grape supply

The first estimates reveal that the total production of bagged white table grapes has fallen by 20 percent this year compared to the previous one, mostly as a result of heavy rains in September, the scarcity and poor quality of irrigation water and the stress caused by the drought that the production area has been suffering for five years. Thus, the predictions early in the season, which pointed to a 15 percent increase in the production, have not become a reality.

The campaign, which will come to a close in the coming days, is expected to finish with some 32 million kilos worth over 31 million Euro at origin, according to data from ASAJA. It is also highlighted that the Aledo variety, which is increasingly demanded in the international markets, has generated 14.4 million Euro in the Vinalopó region.

Vinalopó agricultural entrepreneurs have described the campaign as "uneven". "Although we have achieved acceptable results for the Aledo variety, with prices amounting to around 0.80 Euro per kilogram, other varieties did not even reach 0.30 Euro per kilo," said the president of the Table Grape Sector at ASAJA Alicante, Pedro Rubira.

Exports have been going at a good pace, according to the figures handled by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. Thus, from January to October 2017 (the latest data available), they have exceeded 7,410,000 kilos worth 15,950,736 Euro. This figure represents an increase of 8% compared to the same period of the previous year, when over 6,822,000 kilos were shipped. The total has yet to be updated with the figures achieved from sales abroad in recent months, which is when the most grapes are exported.
