Indian farmers demand higher compensation for crop loss
The government announced a compensation of 36,000 to 45,000 rupee (475- 595 euros) for a hectare of bananas. This would mean farmers would get a mere 14.5 to 18 rupees (0.19-0.24 euros) per banana plant.
The Times of India recorded the District President of Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, R. Shanmuganandha Karthees as saying: "It takes 10 months to grow ordinary varieties of banana and 12 months for red bananas. The compensation announced by the government is insufficient to even buy new seeds and is humiliating to the farmers. We demand 150 rupees per banana plant.”
They also sought higher compensation for damaged coconut and rubber trees and damaged houses.
