Myanmar Ministry permits onion imports

According to U Khin Maung Lwin, assistant secretary of Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry will now allow onions to be imported. The price of onions has increased in the domestic market and onions are being imported illegally. If import is legalised again, onion prices will balance out and foreign import will decrease. The authorisation is only temporary, until the onion price stabilises, the Ministry of Commerce told the Myanmar Times.

Onions have been allowed in via sea port- and border trade since November 27th. In 2015, the Ministry also allowed onions to be imported from foreign countries as a temporary measure to tackle the rising price. The merchants imported onions from India and China in 2015. The price of Indian and Chinese onions is less than that of the domestic produce.
