The president of the Pineapple Working Group at the International Societyfor Horticultural Sciences (ISHS), Domingo Haroldo Reinhardt, has praised todaythe importance of this fruit, considered the queen among all tropical fruit.
Talking to Prensa Latina during the 9th International Pineapple Symposiuman event held for the first time in Cuba, Reinhardt said that there are around80 countries with significant production of this fruit, one of the mosttraditional ones after banana and mango.
This is the third most produced fruit among the tropical and subtropicalones. ISHS is the largest horticultural society in the world, made up of morethan 7,000 scientists.
According to Reinhardt, Costa Rica has been the largest producer andexporter of pineapple globally, while his country, Brazil, is second in termsof volume of production.
The executive said that everyone in the sector wants to increase theproduction of this plant, using less natural resources and less damage to theenvironment, aspects that stand out in the exhibitions of the event.
In his opinion, the pineapple peel is a limitation for a greaterconsumption of this fruit, which is at a disadvantage with banana or mango.
Pre-cut marketing is currently increasing in markets, which facilitates itsgrowing consumption.
Reinhardt gave, as a researcher, a keynote speech entitled 'Limitations forthe cultivation and marketing of pineapple ', which is a contribution to thestudies on this fruit at international level with a view to solving thesedifficulties and future working goals.
This forum is held inparallel to the 5th Symposium on Tropical and Subtropical Fruit Growing, bothgrouped in 'Fruticultura 2017 ', with the participation of more than 400delegates from 24 countries of America, Europe and other continents.
