Romania: Record potato production in Harghita County

Potato producers in Harghita County, Romania, have harvested the biggest production of the past 27 years, averaging 26.3 tonnes per hectare, despite the very low purchase price, reported Jenő Török, Head of the Agricultural Directorate of Harghita County, to Agronpres news agency.

According to the source quoted, the county had not had such good yields since 1990; in some areas, up to 35 tonnes of potatoes have been harvested per hectare. The results have been slightly lower in Gheorgheni region because of the drought during the last growing stage.

Jenő Török was said to be very satisfied with both the volume and the quality of the potatoes, although he is not as happy with the low prices. According to the expert, the fall in prices is mostly due to the good yield and low consumption, and partly to the cheap potatoes imported from Poland. According to Török, there is still a chance for slight price increases, and according to producers, if these stay or fall below the current levels, it could be a "catastrophe."

Potatoes are the most common crop in Harghita County, with a total of about 8,250 hectares planted.
