China: Price of Lixia Ji'nan garlic bounces back

According to data from the Ji'nan Lixia Price Bureau, the price of garlic in Hualian supermarkets is now rising again. The data shows that the price was 5.99 yuan per 500 gram on 9 October, which is an increase of 82.6% from last week, but a drop of 7.8% since last month, and a drop of 17.7% from last year. The Price Bureau has found the following reasons for this increase in price:

Firstly, there has been a lot of rain this year, so the garlic quality has dropped, making it unfit for storage, and decreasing the production.

Secondly, a squeeze on the labour supply has led to a decrease of the garlic production area.

Thirdly, because of the recent holidays, the garlic demand has increased, but there is not enough supply to meet this demand.

The Ji'nan Lixia Price Bureau estimates that, as the weather turns colder, the garlic price will continue to rise slightly.
