French group will be in charge of their marketing

Spain: Asturian kiwis to be distributed worldwide

Kiwis are here to stay on the banks of the Narcea River as it passes through the council of Salas. The fruit's first multi-variety plantation already occupies 15 hectares in Cornellana. In them, the company 'Kiwis La Rodriga' cultivates three varieties: Nergi, Hayward and OscarGold, with the latter being the most prominent, with a total of ten hectares planted. The French group Primland will distribute the Hayward and OscarGold worldwide, while the Nergi, with only one hectare planted, will be fully marketed in Europe.

The French company is present in 35 countries and distributes 20,000 tonnes of this fruit worldwide. "Production is expected to reach 500 tonnes in four years," announced Rafael Olivo, general director of the company Kiwis La Rodriga, at the plantation's inauguration.

The project, with an initial investment of 1,250,000 Euro, counts with the latest techniques for fertilization, pruning or irrigation. Furthermore, a mesh covers the entire farm in order to protect the fruit against hailstorms, such as the one recorded in August in the region, which caused great damage to the agricultural sector. The project also aims to encourage other producers in the region to plant kiwis. "By joining us, you can benefit from the latest cultivation methods, technical advice, etc., and with the guarantee that the product will be marketed."
