Nearly 30,000 metric tonnes of Kharif potatoes have perished in Maharashtra due to spells of heavy rain in September, according to estimates by the Vegetable Growers' Association of India (VGAI).
VGAI technical director Santosh Sahane said, "This may result in a rise in potato prices around Diwali in the retail market."
VGAI president Shriram Gadhave told TOI that the rains resulted in a dip in yield of other vegetables as well, with farmers suffering 40% to 50% yield losses.
