Indian onions are currently in crisis. “Due to bad weather and other factors, such as outdated practices, there has been a shortage of onion production in India. There are fewer crops, yet the demand in the local market and abroad remains high. Export is considerably lower, by 30% compared to last year, pushing prices up," according to Tushar Kharkhar of Shanteya Exports. Kharkhar adds, “Typically high quality red onions are what India exports. These are sold year round, but high season would be between November to July. Indian white onions on the other hand are not very high in quality, at least not enough for it to be considered export quality.”
Shanteya exports mostly to the Gulf area. Despite recent unfavorable events in the Middle East, Kharkhar does not believe it will affect their business.
