Irish farmer sees €500k in losses after floods

Seamus Lynch was left stunned when he arrived at his 125-acre crop at Porthall in Lifford, Co Donegal, ireland on Wednesday morning.

A combination of a spring tide and the torrential rain which lashed the North-West on Tuesday night left many parts of his land on the banks of the River Foyle waist-high in water.

Mr Lynch said: “It’s very much a salvage job. We have been pumping out water steadily for the past number of days.

“It’s just so hard to take it all in. It’s been a nightmare to be honest. We just have to keep sticking with it.

“We will know the full extent of the damage and what we have been able to save in a fortnight’s time.”

The experienced farmer could be facing a huge cost with each acre of his 65 acres of potatoes worth up to €5,000, while the damage to barley and corn could see a total bill of almost €500,000.

Mr Lynch is one of hundreds of people who have been affected by the floods after more than a month’s rain fell in just a few hours, with 17
families left homeless.
