Italy: Drought continues to be a problem

"Drought continues to be a problem and there is no sign of rain. It's difficult to carry out transplants. We are trying to make do with the water we have but things are getting worse. We have started harvesting beets, celery, chicory and endive a few days ago and we will start with parsley soon," explains Angelo Lorusso from Agrilorussa, a company covering 60 hectares of open fields in the Trani area.

300-400 thousand plants of the vegetables mentioned above are available.

"As yields seems to be lower and growth cycles seem to be slower, we expect prices to be rather satisfactory. As we deal with autumn-winter produce, demand should increase starting with next month."

The season will continue until at least May-June 2017, with a commercial peak starting a couple of months from now and continuing until February-March.

While making a comparison with the previous campaign, Angelo says that "things should be different from the last season, when the produce got ruined in winter, leaving very little for the market. This year, we encountered more problems during transplants and the lower yields could lead to higher prices."

"99% of our work depends on the weather. We can work well if summers and winters are good, otherwise we can't survive."
