Australia's largest pineapple producer to expand with 3 million plants
Pinata Farms started out in the Northern Territory in 2013 with 400,000 pineapple plants grown on 10 hectares near Humpty Doo, south of Darwin.
Over the next few years Pinata plans to double its pineapple production. Farm manager Mark Smith said this year close to a million pineapples had been planted as part of the expansion.
"We have got just over three million [pineapple plants] in the ground and we are going to keep going, we want to try and get to 150,000 trays per year," he said.
"We are about half that at the moment and last year we did about half that again, so we're steam rolling ahead with the pineapples."
"We try and put in about 68,000 to 70,000 pineapples a week, but we are taking out sort of half that every week so it is not just snowballing up — it is a slow process, we put in and we take as well."
