WA potato growers unsatisfied with refund over dropped case

Potato growers say a $650,000 reimbursement offer from the Western Australian government over a dropped legal battle with Perth's maverick "Spud King" is less than half of what they are owed but farmers may be forced to accept it.

The government has written to 74 potato growers offering to return more than $650,000, including $484,316 of growers' funds vested to the state government to pursue the original court action and $200,000 in court costs paid to the state by Galati nominees.

But WA Potato Growers Association chief executive Simon Moltoni says in exchange for getting their money back, the growers must sign a deed of distribution binding them against any further legal claims to recoup their finances.

"In exchange for getting your own money back you have to sign away your legal rights ... it's disturbing ... I'm quite shocked they're including this deed," he told AAP on Thursday.

He said some desperate growers would be tempted by the offer as the local market had been hit with record low prices. Mr Moltoni believes it is far from over saying "We won't be swept under the carpet."
