Peru has 23,279 hectares devoted to avocado cultivation, with an average yield of between 12 and 15 tonnes per hectare, according to a recent report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
According to this report, most of Peru's avocado production takes place in the La Libertad area and in Lima, which together account for more than 40% of the production. The most common varieties are the Hass and Fuerte.
"Each variety has its own market. Virtually the entire Hass harvest (95% of the total production) is intended for export, while the Fuerte remains mainly in the domestic market," points out the document.
In that sense, it is emphasised that the domestic market consumes 170 thousand tonnes of avocados a year, and it is also stated that the average per capita consumption of avocados in Peru is 5 kilos per person per year.
"These consumers prefer green-skinned avocados like the Fuerte, but campaigns are underway in order to give a boost to the consumption of Hass avocados," states the USDA report.
