High temperatures have taken a toll on the avocado production in the south of Gran Canaria, where the harvest of this tropical fruit, cultivated especially in the municipality of Mogán, has already started. The heat has even caused some growers to lose their entire production.
The municipality is estimated to have about 25 hectares devoted to avocado crops, with a number of different commercial varieties planted. Avocado trees yield a different volume each year. The heat has been their main enemy, because the fruit is very sensitive to high temperatures.
When it comes to mangoes, their production has been similar to previous years, since this tree is much more resistant to high temperatures. These two fruits will actually be the protagonists of the second edition of the summer mango and avocado fair, which will be held on the first weekend of September in Mogán and will count on the participation of some twenty producers.
About 3,000 kilos of mangoes and 800 of avocados are expected to be brought to the event, in addition to other tropical fruits grown in the area.
