Polish growers expect drop in onion production
Despite initial good prospects from the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS), which had reported on a possible increase in the country's onion production, at the moment Polish producers are more inclined to believe that the gross harvest will noticeably decrease. This was reported by APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits, citing the FreshMarket website.
It should be recalled that, according to preliminary estimates of the department's experts, onions were almost the only crop for which production was expected to grow. The gross onion harvest had been forecasted to reach 655,000 tonnes by the Department's analysts, compared to the 651,000 tonnes harvested in 2016.
However, at the moment, onion producers expect the product's harvest to be lower than last year due to unfavourable weather conditions in the second half of the summer. Excessive moisture, as a result of heavy rains, caused a massive spread of fungal diseases. The situation was aggravated by the impact of hail. As a result, growers are reporting a significant drop in yields, which in some cases don't reach 30 tonnes per hectare.
