Canary climate not ideal for papayas, but production continues to develop

Greenish on the outside, orange inside and with a sweet taste; in the Canaries, 40 million kilos of papayas are harvested every year.

In spite of the large volume produced, the climate is not the most suitable for the fruit's cultivation, especially because of the low temperatures. That is why all the farms devoted to the production of this tasty and nutritious fruit resort to greenhouses.

In any case, the production of papayas in the islands has continued developing, especially in recent years. All efforts are focused on enhancing the flavour of this fruit, which must be perfectly ripe when it reaches the market, and above all, should leave a good taste in the mouth.

This and other issues affecting the production of papayas have been addressed by almost a hundred growers across the Archipelago at a seminar held in Gran Canaria. Besides the difficulties caused by the cold, there are also other threats, such as powdery mildew and red spider mites.
