Bagatipara upazila

Mango growers in India expect over $5m in profit this season

Mango growers of Bagatipara upazila in India are expecting to make over $5.5 million profit this season.

Local source said, the mango cultivation has brought solvency for 1200 farmers and 300 poor and marginal labourers from the beginning of the month of Joishtho. After harvesting Boro paddy, the day labourers engage themselves with the profession to make extra money.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said around 60 per cent of mangoes have been grown in Bagatipara upazila and 40 per cent has grown in all the four upazilas of the district. The farmers of the area export the juicy fruit to Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Mymensingh, Tangail and other areas across the country, DAE added.

"I planted 10 saplings of Gopalbhog mango variety five years ago spending Tk 6,600", said farmer Kamrul Hasan. He said, "I have already achieved 15 maunds of quality fruit from the trees this season."
