First Canary papaya spreading across Europe

Papayas are one of the healthiest tropical fruits. In fact, in Costa Rica and Mexico, the tree in which they grow is known as "the tree of good health". Besides being tasty and nutritious, the flowers, the leaves, the pulp and seeds all have interesting medicinal qualities, with the last two being fully edible. Papayas have astringent, digestive, antioxidant, laxative and healing properties.

In addition to regulating the nervous system and strengthening the heart, the fruit has numerous healthy properties, regardless of whether it is consumed fresh, as juice, liquefied or in sweet and savoury recipes. That is why it is advisable to consume it regularly, as it contains much needed nutrients (vitamins and minerals), while only contributing 53 calories per 100 grams.

Tenerife-based entrepreneurs Daniel and José Félix Hernández are promoting the qualities of their Gourmet Premium Papaya, the first Canary papaya; unique in its kind, which has started spreading across Europe and is the result of ten years of research.

A sweeter papaya
The variety is called Sweet Mary and it is grown in one of the most privileged areas of the Canary Islands for this type of fruit, namely in Tejina, Valle Guerra and Punta del Hidalgo, belonging to the historic municipality of San Cristóbal de la Laguna, on the island of Tenerife.

Canary papayas stand out for their greater sweetness, their firm and fleshy texture and a soft aroma. It has a homogeneous appearance with a striking lime-green colour, which becomes orange when it reaches the optimum degree of maturation. In the mouth, its fresh and sweet taste evokes that of coconuts, peaches, citrus and tropical fruits and it is very striking that it has managed to completely eliminate the notes of bitterness typical of other varieties.

It is also worth noting that it has a higher Brix (measure of sugar concentration) than other varieties and a more intense texture, aroma and flavour.
