Tomatoes were one of the “saddest items” in the fruit and veg aisles, said Margy Abbot of AMJ Produce.
“Everything is expensive at the moment,” said Ms Abbot, who reported tight supplies from flood-affected growers in Queensland were also affecting cucumbers, capsicum, eggplant and strawberries. Local glasshouse tomatoes are “all shades of orange because there is not enough warmth to give them the red blush and flavour we love”.
“We usually rely on Queensland for fill-in crops at this time of year, but the roll-on effects of recent floods in the tropics is driving prices up,” she said.
“Tomatoes, in particular, are ridiculous.”
