Farmers predict early mango harvest in Katherine, Australia

Mango trees in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory have started flowering a month earlier than usual, leading to predictions of an early harvest. Cool overnight temperatures around Katherine have encouraged trees to push flowers, with those in the Darwin region already in flower for several weeks.

Mango grower Mitchell Curtis had not expected his trees to start flowering for three to four weeks.

"We like to have about three weeks below 16 degrees here in Katherine to get a good response for flowering. We are right in the middle of that at the moment so I am quite surprised," Mr Curtis said.

"They look nice and healthy, they look strong and there are some here in pollen that are pretty close to setting fruit."

Mr Curtis said the recent flowering meant he expected a smaller pick of fruit to be ready in early September.

"We are going to have to pick the orchard twice. We'll come and get this lot then [the fruit from] when they flower properly," he said.
