Giant date trees travel to Adelaide's Torrens to honour soldiers

Weighing in at more than 6 tonnes each and about 6 metres in height, moving a fruiting date tree is no easy feat. So why would Riverland grower Dave Reilly want to move five of the monster trees almost 300 kilometres to Adelaide?

Because it was an opportunity to plant his palms in an Adelaide parkland rich with history, he said. The date palms lining Adelaide's storied Torrens Parade Ground were in need of a re-plant, with the ageing trees standing since 1892.

Having grown the exotic fruit at his property in Gurra Downs for many years, Mr Reilly said he jumped at the chance to contribute.

"It was certainly unexpected … we do not grow trees for ornamentals, we grow them for fruit production, and these were good fruit trees," he said.

"For us as a family, we were thrilled to get an invite to line ours up alongside some of the most historical palms in the state."
