Juan R. Alarcón, head of sales at CCL Fruits & Vegetables

"Bell pepper prices remain stable"

Bell peppers are a very popular crop in the area of Almeria and Murcia; so much so, that it is one of the vegetables with the biggest production and which remains available for longer. "We, as well as other companies, practically don't sell this pepper in Spain," states Alarcón. Markets such as Germany, Poland or France are the main importers of practically 100% of the production.

One of aspects standing out the most about the product is its stable price. "Everything that goes up fast, has to go down fast, too," affirms Alarcón referring to the changes in vegetable prices due to the weather conditions of recent months. However, "in the case of peppers, given that there has been a lack of product, the price has remained stable and that is always an advantage when it comes to marketing," added Alarcón. "The price per kilo of this pepper (red and yellow) is now reaching around 0.90 Euro and even 1 Euro," points out Alarcón. The green one is always a little more expensive.

"We have to take into account that Almeria's campaign is almost finished; we are now marketing those of Murcia," explained the representative of CCL Fruits & Vegetables. The seasonality and the climate cause the Andalusian province to move on to the marketing of other products, giving way to the fruits and vegetables from Murcia. Although it is still early for this company to take stock of the increase in sales of bell peppers in recent years (it is only 4 years old), they can confirm that so far the volume has been increasing year after year and "we expect this to continue," concludes Alarcón.
